Solar panels are used in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts to create hot water or electricity. Solar panels that convert light into electricity are called photovoltaics (PV). Solar Thermal panels are used to heat water for use through out your home and for heating purposes. In a PV system, when the sun shines electricity travels from the panels into an inverter. An inverter converts the electricity produced by the panels from DC power to AC power for use in your home. In a solar thermal system water is pumped up to the panels to be heated and returns at the desired tempture for immediate use or to be held in a storage tank.
At night or during cloudy weather your home or business relies on the utility company for electricity and on a backup heating system, such as natural gas, oil, or propane.
